On Friday, Maumee's Mayor Timothy L. Wagener announced he was resigning from his post with the City.

In a press release Wagener said "It was 21 years ago when, out of my deep love for Maumee, I ran and was elected to City Council. My love for the City of Maumee was so great that I could not imagine a life in which I was not involved in some leadership role. For the past 13 years, I have proudly served as the Mayor of this excellent City. More importantly, I have had the pleasure to serve as Mayor of a City full of excellent and loving citizens."

The Mayor went on to say that he was stepping down from his position due to a number of personal reasons including "my health and that of my wife".

The 55-year-old suffered a stroke in 2010.

Wagener did add, however, that he will continue to call Maumee home.

Under the city's charter, City Council President Richard Carr is elevated to the position of acting mayor.

Wagner received a reprimand from the Ohio Ethics Commission earlier this year for comingling personal and office funds.

He was also alleged to have obtained a list of retiring city employees and their spouses for use in his private insurance work.

He easily won re-election in November despite the claims.
