TOLEDO -- Who needs a neighborhood block watch when cell phones can now be your eyes on every corner? That's the hope for Toledo's new 911 texting service: Eye Citizen.

The service allows residents in the Old Orchard area to receive text messages of crime reports within their neighborhood. Those who choose to opt-in to the program will get up-to-date information straight to their cell phone regarding neighborhood police activity much like a physical block watch would provide. The service also sends alerts via email.

Toledo City Councilman Tom Waniewski will discuss the pilot program and plans for future expansion at a 3:30 p.m. news conference at One Government Center on Thursday, Sept. 20. The service is provided free to the city from Vanstar.
