DETROIT -- An 86-year-old woman from Wayne County has died from the West Nile virus.
Michigan health officials say the woman is the fourth person in the state to die this year.

Michigan Department of Community Health Interim Chief Medical Executive Dean
Sienko said there have been 80 human cases of West Nile in the state this year, 62 required hospitalization.

Last year, Michigan recorded 34 human cases and 2 deaths.
Sienko says Michigan is experiencing an "epidemic of West Nile virus activity."

Experts think a mild winter, early spring and hot summer have helped stimulate mosquito breeding and the spread of the virus.

TheOhio Department of Health has reported 46 human cases of West Nile in the State with no fatalities.
There are 3 confirmed cases in Lucas county according the the ODH website.
