SYLVANIA TWP. -- Police responded to reports of a man causing a disturbance a Walmart store on Central Avenue early Friday.

Police have identified the suspect as 51-year-old Craig Lasta. Investigators say they received a 911 call around 2 a.m. from a shopper that a man was yelling just outside the store.

"There was an individual there yelling crazy things. 'Hitler's dead. I want a gun.' That sort of thing. So, somewhat disturbing," said Deputy Chief Ray Carroll of the Sylvania Township Police Department.

When officers arrived they could hear Lasta yelling and observed movement inside, police said.

“Police ran the license plate and found that the registered owner of the camper had a history of violent criminal acts, which further prompted the call for action,” said Carroll

After several unsuccessful attempts to make contact with Lasta through verbal communication outside of the camper and from a “throw phone,” the Sylvania Metro Response Team was called in to assist, Carroll said.

Lasta surrendered to authorities shortly after tear gas was introduced around 6 a.m. Employees and customers inside the store were locked down during the incident.

A SWAT team obtained empty bottles of alcohol from inside the RV. No weapon was found.

Lasta was booked into the Lucas County Jail and is charged with inducing panic, disorderly conduct and obstructing official business. Lasta is expected to be arraigned on Monday.
