Ohio officials want to build a state facility to temporarily house exotic animals seized under a new law that will take effect in September.
A spokeswoman for the state's Department of Agriculture tells NBC4i News that the structure would contain dozens of cages for confiscated creatures.
"We just want to reassure everyone this is going to be a very well built, a very secure facility that’s going to be highly monitored out here on campus. We’re talking about cages that meet the highest USDA and Zoological Association’s standards,” said Erica Pitchford the department spokeswoman.
A legislative committee would have to approve the building's funds. They have yet to figure out a final cost for the facility.
A law that takes effect on Sept. 3 will restrict ownership and immediately ban people from buying new dangerous exotic animals.
