TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) - New cameras aimed at catching speeders and red light runners in Toledo are paying off for the city. Eight new cameras went up in July, resulting in nearly 8,000 tickets. For the month alone, fines from all of Toledo's traffic cameras will add up to nearly $1.7 million if all the tickets are paid.

The Blade reports that police officials are defending the use the automated traffic cameras because of big declines in the number of officers on the street.

Each ticket carries a $120 penalty.
