WEST BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Many Michigan inland lakes that rely on water from other sources to stay healthy are showing significant drops this summer.
Experts point to long stretches of hot, dry weather and a mild winter that didn't produce much snow. The head of the Michigan Lake & Stream Associations tells the Detroit Free Press that some boats can't float. Scott Brown says it will take "drastic amounts" of rain to turn things around. Inland lakes that are fed by underground springs could be in better shape.
In Oakland County's West Bloomfield Township (north of Detroit), Carim Calkins says he bent the propeller on his boat on Middle Straits Lake. He says it's hard to get the boat into deeper water without first hitting bottom. Warm, shallow water also contributes to unwanted vegetation.
