NEWPORT, MICH. (AP) -- A car carrying four people from a fireworks show in Monroe County crashed into a median on Interstate 75, killing a 15-year-old girl.

Berlin Fire Chief Paul Barron says the girl was thrown from the car and hit by another vehicle Tuesday night.

He tells the Monroe Evening News "it was awful."

Three others in the car, including a 19-year-old driver, didn't have serious injuries.

Emergency crews were at the scene near Newport Road until 3 a.m. Wednesday.

The girl who died was a student at Riverview High School.

Her name was not immediately released.
