ERIE COUNTY -- The Sandusky Highway Patrol post is investigating a single-vehicle fatal crash that occurred on Campbell Road at the S.R. 2 overpass in Erie County on Sunday evening.

Around 7:21 p.m., the patrol said Christopher Smith, 46, from Sandusky was driving southbound on Campbell and failed to negotiate a curve.

He then crossed the center line and went off the left side of the road, striking a traffic sign and the bridge parapet for S.R. 2. The vehicle then spun back onto the road coming to final rest in the southbound lane.

Smith was transported by LifeFlight from the scene to an area hospital, where he later passed away. The patrol reports he was not wearing a safety belt.

Smith's passenger, 12-year-old Samantha Smith, was transported by ambulance to an area hospital and later taken to a Cleveland's children's hospital. Her condition is currently unknown.

The crash is still under investigation and alcohol is not suspected.
