The adoption process has begun for the so-called "Suitcase 6" and their mother.

Just last month the puppies were found zipped up in a suitcase and abandoned, along with their mother, in North Toledo.

"The person that did it is sick and cruel," potential adopter Kalene Kolebuck said.

Despite being left out with the trash, there has been no shortage of people interested in adopting the animals.

"We've had quite a number of phone calls and emails and questions about people asking for applications," Cyndi Condit of the Toledo Area Humane Society (TAHS) said.

On Friday morning, the TAHS began accepting applications for those interested in making one of the dogs a new family member.

One of the puppies, however, will not be included in the lottery drawing and has already been adopted by the foster family that's been taking care of the dogs since they were found.

Applications will be accepted through 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 16th.

In the days following those that are selected in the random drawing will be contacted and will go through an additional screening process.

Humane society officials also hope that those who are not selected will consider adopting some of other animals available at the TAHS.
