As humans near their final years of life, a growing number are confident they will meet their maker--according to survey results published by the University of Chicago.
Researchers analyzed data from surveys conducted across 42 countries in 1991, 1998 and 2008. They found on average, 43 percent of people aged 68 and older were certain that God exists.
“Looking at differences among age groups, the largest increases in belief in God most often occur among those 58 years of age and older. This suggests that belief in God is especially likely to increase among the oldest groups, perhaps in response to the increasing anticipation of mortality," said Tom W. Smith, director of the General Social Survey, in the school's news release.
Even countries with a large atheist population showed an increased belief in God among age groups. In France, only 8 percent of those younger than 28 said they believed in God, compared to 26 percent of the older group surveyed.
