General Motors is recalling more than 6,000 trucks and SUVs in coordination with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the agency and company have announced.

In some cases, the NHTSA says "the steering gear pitman shaft may not have been adequately hardened and could fracture."

The affected model year is 2012 and the models include the Chevrolet Express, Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Savana and GMC Yukon XL.

GM plans to notify owners who need their vehicles inspected - and possibly have the part replaced - by dealers. The official safety recall starts April 4, 2012.
