TOLEDO -- Beware the "Secret Shopper Scam" spreading through the Toledo area.

The scam starts with a letter containing a check that says you've been selected to be a "secret shopper." The letter then instructs the receiver to deposit the check for $1,965 into their bank account, keep $300 and send the rest to an overseas Western Union account via money transfer.

Toledo police warn the $1,965 check is a forgery and the victims are responsible for the amount deposited.

Any victim of this scam should call their local law enforcement agency immediately.

TPD also warns that solicitations by a company or individual to cash a check and send part of the money back is most likely a scam regardless of the circumstances.
