Ex Toledo Sergeant found not guilty in shooting fellow officer

Former Toledo Police sergeant accused of shooting a fellow police officer was found not guilty by reason of insanity.

Gloria Burks, 50, was being charged with felonious assault with a gun specification and an alternative charge of assault. She is accused of shooting Sgt. Jeffery Bechtel in the arm at the Toledo Police Scott Park District Station on Sept. 20, 2010.

According to the Toledo Blade in assistant county prosecutor Frank Spryzak's closing arguments, he noted, that Ms. Burks was diagnosed with complex partial seizures in October 2008. He also stated that she continually ignored doctors concerns of her and others safety while attending her job as an officer.

Monday afternoon, Lucas County Common Pleas Judge Myron Duhart ruled that Ms. Burks did not understand her actions, do to her medical disorder and that she was having a seizure at the time of the incident.

A March 28th, 2012 hearing date has been set at 10:30 am to determine if Ms. Burks is needed of hospitalization.
