TOLEDO -- A four car crash near the intersection of Cherry St. and Summit St. in downtown left one man dead, sent seven other people to the hospital and caused the closure of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Bridge Thursday afternoon.

The crash occurred shortly after 1:00 p.m. According to a Toledo Police spokesman, a white minivan driven by Ronald Carpenter, 69, of Toledo was traveling westbound on the King Bridge at a high rate of speed when it sideswiped a vehicle driven by Monica Adamson, 30, before rear ending a vehicle driven by a vehicle stopped in traffic. That car, driven by Jerome Jackson, 32, of Sylvania was pushed forward into a vehicle driven by Jeremy Miller, 25 of Toledo whose vehicle was pushed forward into a vehicle driven by Shanice Franklin, 20, of Toledo.

Carpenter was transported to Mercy St. Vincent Hospital where he was pronounced dead at approximately 1:40 p.m. The injured were also transported to Mercy St. Vincent's Hospital where they are undergoing treatment for their inuries.

Westbound traffic on the King Bridge was restricted for more than an hour.
