PANDORA -- A man's love for his dog propelled him to risk his life on Valentine's Day when the pet fell through an ice covered pond.

Stan Newton, 77, scaled the ice to help the dog when he too fell in before 10 a.m. After pushing the dog to safety, Newton was unable to get out of the pond and went unconscious in the cold water.

The victim's wife called 911 and the Putnam County Sheriff's dive team responded to rescue Newton.

"When I got there, (the dog) was on the bank and someone was holding him," Sgt. Brad Nelson told the Findlay Courier

The sheriff's office reports that Newton was submerged for 30 minutes. Paramedics began resuscitation on the way to the hospital.

Newton is in critical condition at St. Rita's Medical Center in Lima.
