A group of British researchers warns compulsively checking your smartphone could lead to an increase in your stress level, HealthDay reports.

The study linking smartphones to a rise in stress focuses on the personal use of the devices, not the professional use. Using smartphones for social media and keeping tabs on friends caused more stress than using them for work purposes.

"The more they're being used the more we're actually becoming a bit dependent upon them, and actually courting stress instead of relieving it," study author Richard Balding, a psychologist in the department of psychology at the University of Worcester in England, told HealthDay.

The study conducted psychometric stress tests on more than 100 participants. Read HealthDay for more information.
