Trucker to face charges in Clay High School student's death

The truck driver involved in Thursday afternoon's crash that killed a Clay High School student will be charged with vehicular homicide.

Oregon police say 78-year-old Lyle Schmidt turned into the path the teen's pickup truck at the intersection of Navarre and South Wynn Road.

16-year-old Cody Van Hersett died at the scene.  Schmidt could face up to 6 months in prison if convicted of the misdemeanor.

Friday, Cody will be honored at the Clay High School basketball game which begins at 7pm.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Home at 440 South Coy Road in Oregon. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 2-8 p.m. and Monday from Noon - 8 p.m. The funeral will be on Tuesday at 1:30 pm at the Clay High School Auditorium where family will greet guests one our prior. Internment will be at St. Ignatius Cemetery immediately following.
