TOLEDO -- Chrysler/Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne says the company is having a hard time producing enough Jeep Liberty's and Wrangler's to keep up with demand. "There is a limit of what we can do, but we know that there is a demand for locally manufactured Wranglers; that's what the people want and we want to give them what they want," Mr. Marchionne said. Marchionne made those remarks on day 2 of Media Week at the 2012 North American International Auto Show at the Cobo Center in Detroit. Marchionne also reiterated his gratitude for the billions of dollars in taxpayer loans provided the company by the administration of President Barack Obama. "We wouldn't be having this conversation if someone had not made a courageous decision in 2009," Mr. Marchionne said. Chrysler has since repaid those government loans with substantial interest.
Michigan's junior United States senator Debbie Stabenow was also present at the auto show checking out Chevrolet's new 2012 Code. She says the auto bailout was the right thing for the Congress to do. "The reason that our economy is coming back right now is because of manufacturing and the automotive industry is leading the way," Sen. Stabenow said.
The 2012 North American International Auto Show opens to the public on Saturday.
