WASHINGTON -- Another year is coming to a close and most Americans are ready to put 2011 in the rear-view mirror, according to a new Associated Press-GfK poll.

Nearly seven in 10 told pollsters that 2011 was a bad year, compared to 29 percent who said the year was a good one.

At the same time, the poll shows Americans are overwhelmingly hopeful for what 2012 will bring for their country and their families. That includes the 78 percent who are optimistic about what the year 2012 will bring for their families and the 62 percent who are optimistic about what the new year will bring for the country as a whole.

Political leanings did show up in the poll, with Democrats - at 40 percent - thinking positively about the 2011.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
