DETROIT -- Chrysler is heading back to the future for its new small car.

The automaker's new compact will be called the Dodge Dart, named after the 1960s small car many gearheads turned into street racers.

The new, fuel efficient dart will hit showrooms sometime during the first half of 2012.  Buyers will have a choice of three four cylinder engines.

The new Dart will make its debut in January at The North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
