A couple who runs a neo-Nazi group in Delaware has received state approval to join its Adopt-A-Highway program, the (Wilmington) News Journal reported.
The Delaware Department of Transportation first rejected attempts to put the party's full name (the "National Socialist Freedom Movement Nazi Party") or one abbreviation ("NSFM88 Nazi Party") on the signs.
A DelDOT spokesperson told the newspaper the department did not want to "associate the state with the term and its generally understood philosophy of advocating the denial of civil rights."
The neo-Nazi group did, in the end, win final approval for two signs with a different abbreviation: Freedom Party.
Two signs went up recently, meaning the National Socialist Freedom Movement Nazi Party is now responsible for cleaning up litter from that portion of the road multiple times each year. Adopt-A-Highway is one of the more popular community-service initiatives in Delaware, the paper reported.
