PORT CLINTON, Ohio (AP) Lake Erie researchers say outbreaks of toxic algae are taking its toll on fish popular with anglers in Ohio.

The head of Ohio's Lake Erie Fisheries Program says invasive species like the white perch already are growing in numbers. Roger Knight tells The News-Herald of Port Clinton he expects there will be an increase of fish that like warm water and a decline in walleye and perch.

That could deal a big economic blow to northern Ohio towns along Lake Erie that depend on tourists who fish for walleye. The lake's tourism industry brings an estimated $10 billion into Ohio.

Scientists think that phosphorus runoff from farms and waste treatment plants are to blame for the algae problem in Lake Erie and other areas of the Great Lakes.
