The city that brought such musical talents as Bob Seger, Ted Nugent, The Eagles, and Madonna is questioning the NFL's choice for the Lions Thanksgiving halftime show.

There is a buzz in Detroit Rock City amongst Lions fans to demand Nickelback not play the halftime show when they take the field against the Green Bay Packers.

On Change.org, an online advocacy site that empowers the voice of the common person, Dennis Guttman started a petition to rid the halftime show of the alternative rockers.

The petition states: “This game is nationally televised, do we really want the rest of the US to associate Detroit with Nickelback? Detroit is home to so many great musicians and they chose Nickelback?!?!?! Does anyone even like Nickelback? Is this some sort of ploy to get people to leave their seats during halftime to spend money on alcoholic beverages and concessions? This is completely unfair to those of us who purchased tickets to the game. At least the people watching at home can mute their TVs. The Lions ought to think about their fans before choosing such an awful band to play at halftime.”

Posts from Detroit fans on the message board call for a replacement act that better represents the city. Detroit fan Robert Jones writes, “It’s a chance for Detroit to be on a national stage and show where we truly are at. Show our passion for our team, and show the world Detroit”.

The current petition against Alt-rock group is nearing its goal of 35,000 signatures.

This isn’t the first time the band has been questioned for a half time show. Winnipeg Free Press writers questioned the National Hockey League choice to have Nickelback play at the Winnipeg Jets season Opener.

But not all are against Nickelback. Cathy Smith Alexander writes on the band’s Facebook page, the idiot who wrote about the Detroit Lions not wanting you guys at halftime needs to get a brain cell!

Supporters of the group have also started a pro-Nickelback half time show petition.

The petition states: “DON'T replace Nickelback as the halftime show for the Thanksgiving game Nickelback are one of the biggest rock bands in world today. Nickelback fans from all around the world want to see them perform live. It's a bullying mentality that's trying to prevent them from performing.”
