As seen in Commissioner Pete Gerkens full statement above, the Lucas County Commissioners held a press conference on Wednesday to voice serious concerns about Ohio's new Republican-drawn congressional map.

Commissioner Tina Skeldon Wozniak said “the 7-0 decision by the Supreme Court permitting a referendum on the unfairly drawn districts sends a clear message that the legislature did not take its responsibilities seriously.”

The House voted to postpone the primary for president, U.S. House of Representatives and political delegates until June 12 due to disputes over congressional district lines. But the March 6 primaries for local races, the state House and Senate, Ohio Supreme Court and U.S. Senate will reamin.

Lucas County Commissioners, all of whom are Democrats, argue the new map pushes Democratic representatives into four districts while protecting Republican incumbents.

They also say they will now have to hold an expensive and unnecessary election that will cost county taxpayers up to a half a million dollars. They are asking for the legislature to stop the political games and do the right thing for the citizens of Ohio.

If two primaries persist in 2012, the commissioners will demand funding for the second from the Ohio Secretary of State's Office.

Are the commissioners overreacting or is the new congressional map indeed flawed? Leave your thoughts below with us.
