MONROE CO. -- A former Monroe County man sentenced to serve between 8 and 30 years for raping two 8 year old girls in 1997 has been granted an early release from prison.

63 year old Rex Layman is scheduled to be released from a minimum security prison in northern Michigan on Dec. 21.

Layman was arrested in October 1997 after the victims' parents told authorities he took them to his Lambertville home where he made them watch pornographic movies and then forced them to perform sex acts on him.

In June 1998, he was sentenced to serve between 8 and 30 years in prison.

Back in March 2010, he was declared eligible for release but Monroe County prosecutors fought the Michigan Parole Board's decision and it was ultimately reversed.

Monroe County plans to appeal the latest decision.

If he is released, Layman will be on two years probation.

Do you think Rex Layman deserves to be released from prison after just serving 14 years for raping two young girls?  Post your comments below.
