OAK PARK, IL. -- Distracted driving comes in many different forms, but not all are created equal. Many states and cities across the country have already banned texting while driving, and now a Chicago suburb is considering a ban on eating while driving.

According to a Huffington Post article, Oak Park officials say they will consider adding an explicit ban on eating while driving when they revisit a local distracted driver ordinance related to texting behind the wheel.

In 2009, 5,474 people were killed on U.S. roadways and an estimated 448,000 were injured in motor vehicle crashes that were reported to have involved distracted driving, according to the Official U.S. Government Website, distraction.gov.

An arborist who travels throughout the Chicago area, who is in his car much of the workday says he has to eat in his car every day.

I put 20,000 miles on my car every year,” said Phil Fitch, to the Chicago Tribune. “I don't really get a lunch break."

Publish reports say Oak Park is the latest community to target the issue, joining a handful of other Chicago-area communities that have looked at prohibiting a variety of driving distractions, from tending to pets and eating to cell phone use.
