The battle of the sexes rages on, but according to a recent insurance survey, women may have the advantage.

The fight over which gender is more capable is nothing new, and certainly not when it comes to which sex is better at driving. A recent poll, conducted by research firm Qaulity Planning for insurer MetLife, says men are over 3x more likely than women to get a ticket for reckless driving or to be cited for drunken driving. “Women are on average less aggressive and more law-abiding drivers — attributes that lead to fewer accidents,” the study says.

And women agree. Over half of all women in the survey said they believe their gender drives more safely than their X-chromosome carrying counterparts. Only 39% of men in the survey claimed they were safer drivers. (To be fair, 35% of men couldn't decide which gender was safer behind the wheel.)

It wasn't all bad news for men. The survey showed they carry higher automotive knowledge when it comes to safety equipment such as stability control - which helps prevent rollover accidents.

Men have also been found to take more risks behind the wheel - leading to an increase in serious crashes.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, more men than women die each year in motor vehicle crashes. "Men take more risks behind the wheel than women, and so men are more likely to get into serious crashes," says Anne McCartt, the institute's senior vice president of research. "We don't have any way of comparing their driving abilities, but on the likelihood of getting into a serious crash in which someone dies, men win handily."
