DETROIT -- Detroit's Big Three automakers all posted gains in September, driven by a higher demand for pick ups and SUVs.

Chrysler was the big winner.  It's auto sales soared 27% last month, with the help of a 45% uptick in Dodge Ram pick-up sales.

Jeeps also did well. Sales of the Jeep Compass more than tripled, while Wrangler sales surged 47%.

General Motors experienced a 20% rise in September, led by a 34% increase in full size pick-up and SUV sales.  Don Johnson, GM's vice president of U.S. sales, said pent-up demand was fueling a lot of the industrywide sales jump, and he expects a slow and steady increase through the end of the year.

At Ford, sales were up just 9%. But SUVs rose 35% and pickups climbed 15%.
