DETROIT -- Contract talks between Chrysler and the United Auto Workers union are on again. Talks broke down earlier this week over financial issues, but talks have resumed. Chrysler plans to hire several thousand more workers over the next four years.
The dispute centered on how much to pay those entry level workers. New hires currently make 14-to-16 dollars an hour. The union wants the lower paid workers to make around $29 per hour, which is more in line with what longtime UAW workers earn.
The union agreed to a no-strike pledge at Chrysler back in 2009 when the automaker reached a bankruptcy deal with the US government. Last week the UAW reached a contract agreement with General Motors.
