OTTAWA CO. -- The Northwest Ohio sheriff who raised eyebrows after proposing tougher penalties for those who ignore dangers while ice fishing is stepping down.

Ottawa County Sheriff Bob Bratton will leave office later this month to become the Genoa Police Chief.  In July, Bratton announced he was going to seek another term as Ottawa County Sheriff.  Bratton has been Sheriff in Ottawa County since 2004.

He caused controversy in February 2009 after more than 100 fisherman were stranded on an ice floe in Lake Erie.  He criticized the fisherman for ignoring cracks in the ice.

He then proposed fines but backed off and decided to let individual fire departments decide on any civil penalties.
