A string of weekend OVI checkpoints and speed traps are keeping northwest Ohio drivers on their toes.

Two impaired drivers were cited in Toledo at the end of July on McCord Road in one OVI checkpoint, and the Sylvania Township Police Department has scheduled a checkpoint for August 20. The location is undisclosed.

"The purpose of the checkpoint is to maximize the deterrent effect and increase the perception of "risk of apprehension" of motorists who would operate a vehicle while impaired by alcohol or drugs," Chief Robert Boehme said. "Through implementation of these checkpoints, the Sylvania Township Police Department hopes to significantly reduce deaths, injuries and property damage caused by drivers who are impaired by alcohol or drugs."

On Saturday, August 13 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., Oregon Police and the state highway patrol conducted a speed enforcement detail on State Route 2 within the city of Oregon. The four hour detail resulted in 30 drivers cited for speed violations, two seat belt violations, one driving under suspension citation and one drug abuse for posession of marijuana.

The checkpoints and detail are funded by a grant from the Ohio Department of Public Safety.
