OREGON -- The fight to protect the Great Lakes received a big boost Monday.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency awarded more than $4.5 million to several agencies whose goal is to preserve the natural treasure and ensure generations to come can enjoy the lakes.

The University of Toledo is getting more than a million dollars to protect Lake Erie from pollution run off from the Wolf Creek watershed. UT President Dr. Lloyd Jacobs says its the school's responsibility to protect the lakes.

$500,000 is going to Wayne State University.  The school wants to create an invasive species early warning system for the Toledo Harbor.
