Superman's famous "S" insignia will grace specialty license plates in Ohio if a nonprofit society formed to honor the comic superhero's creators has its way.

The Siegel and Shuster Society is proposing the license plate that also would contain the legend "Ohio - Birthplace of Superman."

Published reports show that the nonprofit society formed to honor Superman creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster needs to collect at least 500 names on petitions as a first step.

The reports state that state Sen. Tom Patton of Strongsville agreed to propose the plate to the legislature if enough signatures are gathered.

Superman was created in Cleveland by Siegel and Shuster when they were teenagers in the 1930s.

Specialty plates usually cost between $25 and $35 more than standard plates.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
