SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP -- A serious traffic crash involving a patrol car, Dodge Charger and motorcycle sent one man to the hospital early Saturday morning. About 12:19 a.m., Rex Mahlman, 34, of Holland was driving a Yamaha motorcycle southbound on McCord Road when he struck a stopped patrol car and another vehicle. He was ejected from his motorcycle on impact.
Mahlman was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash and was transported to University of Toledo Medical Center with incapacitating injuries. Alcohol is considered a factor in the crash.
Lieutenant John Altman of the Toledo Highway Patrol Post had a Dodge Charger, driven by Albert Riley, 59, stopped on McCord Road for suspected impaired driving at the time of the accident. Lt. Altman was outside of his patrol car and near the left rear portion of his vehicle just before the motorcycle struck the patrol car.
Riley was in the front right passenger seat of the patrol car at the time of the collision. Gina Girlie, 41, was in the right front passenger seat of the Dodge Charger at the time of the collision.
Neither Lt. Altman, Riley nor Girlie was injured as a result of the crash. All vehicles were towed from the scene with disabling damage. The patrol car did have its overhead lights on at the time of the collision.
No charges have been filed and the crash is still under investigation.
Lucas County Sherriff’s Office, Springfield Fire and Rescue, and the Ohio State Highway Patrol were on scene to assist at the crash. McCord Road was shut down for nearly an hour while the investigation was conducted.
