Great Lakes bill draws criticism from surrounding states

COLUMBUS (AP) -- Ohio Gov. John Kasich was expected to announce Friday whether he would sign or veto a bill that would allow Ohio factories to pull more water out of Lake Erie.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Thursday said there could be legal action if the bill becomes law, and a Kasich spokesman says the
office of Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder also expressed concern. Snyder is a fellow Republican; Cuomo is a Democrat.

The proposal is intended to align the state with the Great Lakes Compact. It cleared the Republican-led state Legislature June 28 over objections from two former Republican governors and a former state natural resources director. Newspapers across the state have
urged a veto.

Kasich faces a Monday deadline to act on the bill.

Do you think factories should even be given the option to take water from Lake Erie? Do other states have the right to take action against this type of Ohio law? Leave your comment below with us.
