Ottawa County Sheriff Bob Bratton announced his candidacy for re-election on Friday. Bratton is known for his role as lead investigator in the Oak Harbor murder-suicide case.

In April, Alan Atwater killed his wife and three children before committing suicide. Investigative public records revealed sordid details, including a strained marriage, infidelity and physical abuse.

"The future of law enforcement, both state and national, appears to be deteriorating. As Sheriff, I need to direct my attention to maintaining the effective response that our citizens have come to expect." Bratton said in a released statement.

He also said he was forming various committees and compiling a plan of action for the November 2012 election.
