Gas line break causes evacuations in north Toledo

TOLEDO -- Residents in north Toledo have returned to their homes after Columbia Gas crews and the Toledo Fire Department contained a gas main break in the area of Detroit Avenue and Sylvania Avenue.

The leak was discovered between 9:15 to 9:30 a.m. after a third party contractor struck and broke a gas main at the intersection of Alva Street and Peru Street. A strong odor of gas was reported in the neighborhood.

Police blocked off several intersections in the area and evacuated Alva Street, Peru Street and Woodhaven Drive. According to the Toledo Fire Department, about 30 homes were evacuated.
