LEWISBURG,OH -- Matthew Stevenson, a 2011 graduate of Sylvania Northview High School, died in a car crash near Dayton, Friday, June 24.

The accident happened in Lewisburg, Ohio which is about 20 miles northwest of Dayton.

According to an initial Ohio State Highway Patrol report, Stevenson, 17, was driving on State Route 53, in Preble County, when his car drifted, crossed the center lane and struck a heavy duty pick up truck. Stevenson was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the pick up truck was not injured.

Police said at the time that Stevenson was not wearing a seatbelt; however, later reports indicate the status of the belt restraint was "unknown." Additional reports also indicate the cause of the crash was "excessive speed;" however, the teen is listed as having been driving nine miles over the posted speed limit. Normally, excessive speed is not cited unless speed is determined to be at least 25 miles per hour over the posted limit.

Stevenson's family has questioned protocol and the methods used by troopers in both their investigation and notification of the incident. According to the family, the driver of the pick-up truck was not adequately questioned.

No further information on the investigation has been released by the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
