FINDLAY, OHIO -- Not guilty by reason of insanity. That is the plea Daniel Bixler's attorney filed on Monday in the stabbing death of Vera Jo Riegle back in March.
According to the Findlay Courier, hisattorney, Keith Schierloh, Bixler has taken an exam that showed evidence of mental retardation and low level IQ. Bixler is charged with aggravated murder and four other felonies in the March 26 death of Reigle, who was stabbed 21 times on a railroad bridge beneath Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Way near downtown Findlay.
Schierloh asked for a change of venue because of the publicity surrounding the case. He tells the Courier, "Reaction to this case and other cases of the codefendants have received extensive coverage by the media, thereby making it impossible for this defendant to obtain a fair and impartial jury trial within Hancock County."
Bixler is scheduled to go on trial Sept. 26. In addition to aggravated murder, he is charged with two counts of kidnapping, felonious assault and tampering with evidence.
