COLUMBUS (AP) -- Ohio has seen a steady drop in the number of children placed into foster care, a change child advocates say has helped to reduce the trauma kids feel when they are taken away from their homes.

A new report from the Public Children Services Association of Ohio shows a 42 percent reduction in the number of kids in foster and group homes from 2001 to 2009. They say that's better than other top performing states.

The association says the decrease comes from placing kids with relatives and working with families to address safety issues at home.

The group serves the county child services agencies that administer child welfare programs. They're pushing for more state aid in the next two-year spending plan to support such services.
