TOLEDO, OHIO -- Storms packing heavy rain, blustery winds and hail the size of golf balls swept their way through northwest Ohio Wednesday, uprooting trees, flooding streets and spawning at least one tornado.
Local emergency officials told the Sandusky Register a tornado touched down near Monroeville Wednesday evening. At least one barn was destroyed.
At least 14,000 Ohio customers had no power at mid-morning Thursday. Drenching rain had the Blanchard River rising again in flood-weary Findlay.
The National Weather Service says excessive runoff from the storm, which dumped as much as two to three inches of rain in some areas, will cause minor flooding in low lying areas, poorly drained streets, highways and underpasses in Hancock, Sandusky, Seneca, Wood and Wyandot counties.
Wet weather will continue as moderate to heavy rain is forecast for Thursday.
A flood warning remains in effect until Thursday afternoon for the Maumee River. The river, which is currently at 8.4 feet, has a flood stage of 15.0 feet. It is expected to rise to near 18.5 feet, 100 year flood level, by early Saturday morning. At that point, water will begin to cover Front Street just west of the Grand Rapids business district.
Those in Defiance and Henry counties will likely see a rising Maumee River. The river was three feet above flood stage (10 feet) Thursday morning and is expected to crest near 15.7 feet by Friday midnight. The river last crested at 15.7 feet in Feb. 2008.
Drivers are reminded to never cross a flooded roadway. Turn around, don't drown.
