(Swanton)--The 180th Fighter Wing of the Ohio Air National Guard provides combat-ready airmen for federal, state, and local missions. And these days they are also stewards to the environment as well.

Lt. Colonel Bill Giezie serves as the civil engineer commander, so he's up to speed with new green developments, including a $1.6 million dollar multi-purpose training facility set to open in the fall. One of the highlights will be an aircraft simulator used for pilot training. This means less fuel to burn.

There's also a 1.5 megawatt solar field with enough energy to save 40% of the base's power usage.

Other green highlights include on-site vehicles run on biodiesel fuels, even the lawnmowers too. An instantaneous hot water tank is what is used in addition to a special boiler system.

It's worth mentioning the F-16s themselves, flown by the 180th, are not run on alternative fuel, at least right now. But this could change in the near future.
