TOLEDO, OHIO -- Less than a year ago, over 600 Toledo autoworkers were put back on the job at GM Powertrain. Word on the street is that the West Toledo plant could be welcoming a few hundred more workers soon.
Toledo Mayor Mike Bell, Ohio Gov. John Kasich and General Motors CEO Dan Akerson will announce on Tuesday that GM is set to hire for 250 to 400 jobs for the build of a new 8-speed transmission at Toledo Powertrain. The exact number of jobs created will depend heavily on demand of a vehicle model which has yet to be disclosed.
As WNWO first reported on Friday, the auto giant is expected to announce a $260 million investment in Toledo which includes the development of the new transmission at the W. Alexis Road plant.
Nearly 700 workers were laid-off in late 2009 after a decline in new car sales and faltering economy. Federal assistance from GM helped bring most of those workers back to the line in Nov. 2010. At the time, the Chevrolet Cruze played a pivotal role in the resurgence of the GM brand. Toledo Powertrain was the only plant in North America that produced the Cruze transmission.
There is no word for which vehicle the new 8-speed transmissions would be built.
