TOLEDO, OHIO -- The University of Toledo Lady Rockets culminated an electric run late Saturday afternoon as they claimed the school's first-ever national basketball championship before a record crowd at Savage Arena.
The Rockets rolled past the 'Women of Troy' Trojans of the University of Southern California by a score of 76-68.
Over seven thousand fans packed the house for the Women's National Invitational Tournament (WNIT), setting a record for attendance inside the newly-renovated Savage Arena on the university's Bancroft campus.
Lady Rockets head coach Tricia Cullop told WNWO on Friday that it has been exciting to see all the support from fans.
“It’s been electric it’s been so exciting to see the ticket office area just jam packed," said Cullop. "Our players went out and thanked people because it was just awesome...to see what it could feel like with that much excitement for women’s basketball."
Junior guard Naama Shafir had a career-high 40 points in the win. She was also named WNIT 2011 MVP.
University of Toledo President Lloyd Jacobs says the Rockets' win puts Toledo on the map, in a way the community has been striving for. "These young women are doing exactly what all of us have been trying to do," said Jacobs.
