MAUMEE, OHIO -- You may have noticed a lot of people wearing red Friday-- that was not a coincidence.

National "Go Red for Women Day" is all about raising the awareness that heart disease is the number one killer of women in the United States.

At an event at St. Luke's Hospital on Friday women took advantage of blood sugar, blood pressure, cholesterol and other health tests.

"What a lot of people don't realize is that stress is a big contributor to heart disease and a number of other problems," said Gretchen Carroll, keynote speaker.

"Our goal here is to help women recognize their symptoms to take care of themselves and seek early treatment for their heart disease," said Beverly Malczewski, St. Luke's Cardiac Interventional Services Department.

More than 43 million women is the U.S. have heart disease and do not even know it.

Heart-healthy strategies include a diet full of vegetables, fruits and whole grains along with good old fashioned exercise.
