TOLEDO, OHIO -- One of man's best friend is safe after an ice rescue on the frozen Maumee River Tuesday evening.

Crews were called to the river around 4:00 p.m. after a driver passing over the Glass City Veterans Memorial Skyway bridge spotted a dog on the frozen river.  The pooch became stranded after wandering into the middle of the ice.

"My concern was that he was going to get up and run away (because) he was afraid," said Smith. "I was afraid that he would...fall through the ice and that would be the end of it."

After two attempts to save the dog, Washington Township firefighter Mel Russel was able to pulled the scared pet to safety.

"You know those guys had to risk their selves to go after an animal and they did a very nice thing," said Smith.

The dog was evaluated and did not appear to have suffered any injuries.

If you recognize the dog please contact the Lucas County Dog Warden.
