Need extra cash this holiday season? Your old electronics items could pay you dividends with some stores starting electronic buy-back programs. If you have any used electronics, such as cameras, cell phones or iPods sitting around, those items could be worth something.
Some consumer electronic stores, like Target or Best Buy, have started buy-back programs to give you money for your electronics. "Come in here, we will evaluate it. We will appraise it through our system. Our system is on the computer. It will tell us what the item is worth, and at that point, if the guest agrees, we will give them a Target gift card to use at their leisure," said Target Executive Team Leader Michael Maggiano. With the Target program, Radio Shack actually handles the appraisals.
Although this program is perfect for people who might need some extra cash for the holidays, Target started it a couple months ago in an effort to become more eco-friendly. "Consequently, the more electronics we can get back and distribute correctly or destroy correctly, that's what our game is," said Maggiano. Target management says so far, they've seen more cell phones than any other type of electronic item, and items have gone for $10 to as high as $200. "It depends on the item; the vintage of the item, the quality of the item and what it's worth on the market," Maggiano explained.
Customers can also go to Target's or Best Buy's websites to get their items appraised, but they'll have to wait 10 to 14 business days for their gift card.
