TOLEDO, OH -- A couple of candidates and an entire school community are watching closely as the Lucas County Board of Elections begins the process of recounting a portion of votes from the November 2nd election.

The Springfield levy issue passed by just a few dozen votes, within the margin of error, and the Lucas County Commissioners race was also just too close and needs to be verified.

Both candidates for that spot, George Sarantou and Carol Contrada, were on hand Monday as the BOE randomly selected which polling places would get a second count. Contrada, who leads the race, says she has full confidence in this system.

"I believe in the laws of the State of Ohio, the directives of the Secretary of State and the ability of the Lucas County Board of Elections to implement the law," said Contrada.

Votes cast at the International Union of Operating Engineers will be recounted for the Springfield levy issue.

The following locations were randomly selected to be recounted for the commissioner's race:

  • St. John the Baptist School
  • Christ the King School
  • Beverly Elementary School
  • Ravine Park Village Recreation Hall
  • United Building Trades
  • Bono Baptist Church
  • Eleanor Kahle Senior Center
  • Elmhurst Elementary School
  • Friendship Baptist Church
  • Grace Lutheran Church.

The recount begins Tuesday.
