TOLEDO, OHIO -- A Toledo Police sergeant was in court Thursday after the shooting of a fellow officer in September.

Sergeant Gloria Burks was released on her own recognizance after entering a not guilty plea, in Lucas County Common Pleas Court, on felony charnges that she shot a co-worker.

A criminal and internal investigation was launched after the Monday, Sept. 20 shooting that left Sergeant Jeffrey Bechtel injured. Sgt. Burks was indicted by a Lucas County Grand Jury on one count of felonious assault and one count of assault, according to Toledo Police Captain Ron Navarro.  Both indictments, which include one first-degree felony and one fourth-degree felony, include the provision of Assault on a Police Officer.

Authorities say Sgt. Jeffrey Bechtel was shot in the arm by Sgt. Burks during a shift change at the Scott Park police station.

Sgt. Bechtel was celebrating his 25th year - to the day - anniversary on the day he was shot.  His injuries were non-life threatening, but remains on leave.

Sgt. Burks joined the Toledo Police force in Sept. 1983 and was promoted to sergeant in Nov. 1991. She was said to have been admitted to the University of Toledo Medical Center, immediately following the shooting incident, for a "medical problem." She has since been relieved but remains on the police force.
